PROJECT:
PFIZER PHARMACEUTICALS
I was initially hired by GE ITS to run the Pfizer IT year 2000 migration project. Pfizer had contracted another company to remediate approximately 300 desktops for year 2000. That company was fired after 3 months in May of 1998 for a complete lack of any progress. Pfizer then hired GE Capital, which consulted me to run the project.
I took over towards the end of June,1998 with an initial support staff of 6. Due to various issues and the project already over budget, my team consisted of two people, with the support of the IT staff. I immediately took over the project, and aided in the creation of a database to support our progress by the end of the first week. During phase one, I met with every department head (under IT's direction), to set a remediation schedule.
The next phase was a full inventory of every single desktop's hardware and software, and to schedule the desktop remediation and client training. Third phase was the actual remediation and upgrades, which eventually took place simultaneously to the initial client interviews, and desktop inventory.
Much of the project was behind schedule. Pfizer set an aggressive completion of Phase one for the end of July, end of Phase two at the end of August, and the end of the project by October. I met every deadline ahead of schedule, and completed the project by the end of August- the scheduled completion of Phase 2. My efforts directly led to the projects completion ahead of schedule, at a much reduced cost than expected. I remained on until October, assisting in some other miscellaneous projects including SMS integration and desktop standardization. |
PROJECT: NEW HAVEN BOARD OF EDUCATION
After my completion of the Pfizer remediation project, GE sent me on to a small network update project for the New Haven Board of Education (
Connecticut). The network was rather large and outdated, with the majority of the intra-office links becoming installed as needed, as opposed to a network infrastructure. As such, the overall network was extremely inefficient, no backup or disaster recovery, and old and outdated computers.
My role was overall L3 support/ consulting for the existing full time teams. Any of the higher level support functions became filtered through me. Everything from workstation connectivity troubleshooting, to backup network admin functions, to desktop standardization came through me. While my tenure there was short, it was enlightening to see some of the problems that the educational system faced and continues to struggle with today. |
